Welcome to the third trimester. The final stretch. The moment you've been waiting for. Weeks 28 to 37 are when your baby packs on the pounds, practices for life outside, and gets into position for their grand entrance. Let's break down what's happening in there.
Inside their head, billions of neurons are firing, building the connections that will help them learn, think, and recognize you. And here's a wild fact: even though their skeleton is hardening, the bones in their skull aren't fused yet. This is nature's design—so their head can slightly overlap during birth to fit through the birth canal. Genius, right?
Most babies now turn head-down, settling into your pelvis—ready for birth. They're also shedding the protective coating called vernix caseosa. Some of it gets swallowed and will become their first poop (meconium) after birth. It's all part of the plan.
Their senses are sharp now. They can see light filtering through your womb and recognize your voice. If you've been singing or reading to them, they know you. They've known you for a while.
This is the final chapter. It's exciting, terrifying, and beautiful all at once. Your body has done something incredible. And soon, you'll finally hold the tiny human you've been growing for nine months.
📌 Week-by-Week Highlights (28-37)
- Weeks 28-32: Weight triples, brain neurons connect, skull bones flexible
- Weeks 33-37: Full term, head-down position, vernix sheds
- Week 37: ~2.7 kg (6 lbs), smooth skin, ready to meet you
