Pregnancy Symptoms A to Z: What's Normal and What's Not
From A to Z, here's what your body might do during pregnancy.
Pregnancy does weird things to your body. Like, really weird. Things nobody warned you about. Things you're not sure you should mention to your doctor because what if it's just you?
Spoiler: it's probably not just you. Here's your A to Z guide to pregnancy symptoms — what's normal, what's not, and when to call for help.
A - Acne, Anxiety
Acne: Hormones can make your skin freak out. It's normal. Gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturizers help.
Anxiety: Worrying about the baby, labor, life — normal. But if it's constant and overwhelming, talk to someone.
B - Back Pain, Braxton Hicks
Back pain: Your center of gravity shifts. Your back works overtime. Support belts and gentle stretching help.
Braxton Hicks: "Practice" contractions. They're irregular and stop if you move. Real contractions? They keep coming.
C - Cravings, Cramping
Cravings: Pickles and ice cream? Weird combos? Normal. Just don't go overboard on junk food.
Cramping: Mild cramps can be normal (uterus growing). Severe or persistent? Call your doctor.
D - Dizziness, Dreams (Weird Ones)
Dizziness: Blood pressure changes. Stand up slowly. Stay hydrated.
Dreams: Vivid, bizarre, sometimes scary. Hormones and anxiety. Normal. Tell your partner about the giraffe dream — they'll laugh.
E - Edema (Swelling)
Swollen feet and ankles? Common. Sudden, severe swelling in face and hands? Could be preeclampsia — call doctor.
F - Fatigue, Frequent Urination
Fatigue: First trimester exhaustion is real. Third trimester too. Rest when you can.
Frequent urination: Baby on bladder. Annoying but normal. If it burns, could be infection — check with doctor.

G - Gas, Gestational Diabetes
Gas: Bloating, burping, tooting — all amplified. Normal. Blame progesterone.
Gestational diabetes: Tested around 24-28 weeks. Manageable with diet and/or meds. Not your fault.
H - Heartburn, Hemorrhoids
Heartburn: Baby pushing on stomach. Small meals, avoid spicy, prop yourself up at night.
Hemorrhoids: Common and annoying. Fiber, water, stool softeners. They usually go away after birth.
I - Insomnia, Itchy Belly
Insomnia: Can't sleep even when exhausted? Hormones, anxiety, discomfort. Normal. Rest when you can.
Itchy belly: Skin stretching. Moisturize. If intense itching all over, call doctor (rare liver issue).
L - Leg Cramps, Linea Nigra
Leg cramps: Often at night. Stretch, stay hydrated, magnesium might help.
Linea nigra: That dark line down your belly? Hormones. Fades after birth.
M - Mood Swings
Happy one minute, crying the next. Hormones. Normal. Warn your partner, give yourself grace.
N - Nausea, Nesting
Nausea: "Morning" sickness is a lie — it can hit anytime. Ginger, small meals, call doctor if severe (hyperemesis).
Nesting: Sudden urge to clean/organize. Normal. Don't overdo it.
P - Pelvic Pain, Pica
Pelvic pain: Ligaments stretching. Sharp but brief. If constant, talk to doctor.
Pica: Craving non-food items (dirt, ice). Mention to doctor — could indicate deficiency.
Q - Quickening (First Movements)
Those first flutters around 18-22 weeks? Magic. Also known as "is that gas or baby?" phase.
R - Round Ligament Pain
Sharp pain on one side when you move fast. Ligaments stretching. Normal. Move slowly.
S - Shortness of Breath, Stretch Marks
Shortness of breath: Baby pushing on lungs. Normal. If severe, mention it.
Stretch marks: Genetic. Moisturize, but they're not guaranteed. They fade.
V - Varicose Veins
Bulging veins in legs or... elsewhere. Common. Compression stockings help.
W - Weight Gain
It's supposed to happen. Every body is different. Trust your doctor's guidance.
Z - Zzz (Lack of Sleep)
Welcome to pregnancy insomnia. Pillows everywhere, bathroom trips every hour. Normal. Nap when you can.
When to Call the Doctor
Some symptoms need attention:
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe pain (anywhere)
- Sudden severe swelling (face/hands)
- Vision changes
