Parenting Fails: The Funniest Things Our Kids (and We) Have Done
Sometimes you just have to laugh. Here are our favorite parenting fails.
Parenting is beautiful. It's also ridiculous. Like, really ridiculous.
Between the toddler fashion choices, the public meltdowns, and the things we do as parents that we never thought we'd do... sometimes the only option is to laugh.
We asked parents to share their funniest parenting fails. Here are the moments that made us laugh until we cried.
Toddler Fashion: A Choice
— Sarah, mom of a 3-year-old
"My daughter insists on picking her own outfits. Which is how she showed up at daycare wearing a princess dress, rain boots, a winter hat, and sunglasses. In summer. The teachers loved it. I died a little inside, but also, honestly? She looked amazing."
— Mike, dad of twins
"My son went through a phase where he would only wear his underwear on his head. Every time we tried to put clothes on him, he'd run away laughing. We have approximately 47 photos of a naked toddler with Spider-Man underwear on his head. His wedding slideshow is going to be interesting."
Public Meltdowns: The Audience Participation
— Jenna, mom of a 2-year-old
"My son had a full meltdown in Target because I wouldn't let him eat the display bananas. He was lying on the floor, screaming, kicking. An elderly woman walked by, looked at him, looked at me, and said, 'Don't worry, dear. He'll be in therapy eventually.' Best parenting pep talk ever."
— Rachel, mom of a 4-year-old
"My daughter threw a tantrum in the grocery store because I wouldn't buy her a cake. She screamed, 'You're the worst mom ever!' at the top of her lungs. A stranger walked by and whispered, 'It doesn't get better, but the wine does.' I felt so seen."

The Things Kids Say (Out Loud)
— Chloe, mom of a 5-year-old
"We were in the checkout line, and my son pointed at a woman and yelled, 'Mommy, why is that lady so big?' I wanted to disappear. I apologized profusely, and the woman laughed and said, 'Honey, I'm pregnant. Your son has a bright future as a comedian.' I bought her coffee."
— Tom, dad of a 3-year-old
"My daughter announced at my work Zoom meeting, 'Daddy has boobies too, but they're small.' I muted myself, but everyone saw me dying of laughter. My boss still brings it up."
Parenting Fails: Things We Accidentally Did
— Maya, mom of twins
"I was so exhausted that I put the baby's diaper on backwards. Didn't realize until she peed through it. That was my life for a solid 48 hours straight."
— Danielle, mom of a 1-year-old
"I spent 20 minutes looking for my phone. I was using it as a flashlight. Under the couch. While holding it."
— Priya, mom of a 2-year-old
"I accidentally wore my shirt inside out to daycare pickup. Didn't notice until another mom pointed it out. I just laughed and said, 'Parenting win — I actually remembered to wear a shirt.'"
The "I Can't Believe This Is My Life" Moments
— Alicia, mom of a 3-year-old
"I once negotiated with a toddler for 20 minutes about why we can't have ice cream for breakfast. I lost. We had ice cream for breakfast. Some battles aren't worth fighting."
— Jenna, mom of a 4-year-old
"My son asked me why the dog doesn't wear pants. I still don't have an answer. It's been three years."

The Bottom Line
Parenting is messy. Kids are weird. And we all do ridiculous things.
The fails, the tantrums, the embarrassing moments — they're part of the story. And someday, they'll be the stories you tell at dinner parties (or use as leverage when your teenager is being difficult).
So laugh when you can. Laugh at yourself, at your kids, at the chaos. It helps.
