First Trimester Nutrition: Eating When Nothing Sounds Good
First trimester eating is survival mode. Here's how to get through it.
You planned to eat healthy during pregnancy. Kale salads, quinoa bowls, perfectly balanced meals.
Then the first trimester hit. And suddenly, the thought of kale makes you want to throw up. Actually, everything makes you want to throw up.
Welcome to first trimester nutrition — where survival is the goal, and "eating healthy" looks very different than you imagined.
First, Let Go of "Perfect"
The first trimester is about survival. Your body is building a placenta from scratch, growing a whole new organ, and dealing with hormone surges. If all you can eat is crackers, eat the crackers.
Your prenatal vitamin is doing a lot of the heavy lifting right now. Food is secondary. Whatever you can keep down is a win.
The Bedside Snack Station
Nausea is often worse on an empty stomach. And the worst time? First thing in the morning.
Set up a snack station on your nightstand: plain crackers, dry cereal, or pretzels. Eat a few before you even sit up. Let them settle for 10-15 minutes, then try to get up slowly.

What to Eat When You Feel Terrible
Bland carbs: Crackers, toast, plain rice, pretzels. They're easy on the stomach and settle nausea for many women.
Ginger: Ginger tea, ginger ale (real ginger, not just flavor), ginger candies. It's one of the few things scientifically shown to help nausea.
Cold foods: Sometimes cold foods are less triggering than hot ones. Smoothies, yogurt, fruit, popsicles.
Small, frequent meals: An empty stomach makes nausea worse. Eat something small every 2-3 hours, even if it's just a few crackers.
Whatever sounds good: If you're craving something, eat it (within reason). Your body might be telling you what it needs.
What About Food Aversions?
Suddenly hating foods you used to love? Totally normal. Chicken, coffee, vegetables — common aversions.
Don't force yourself to eat things that make you gag. Find alternatives. Can't do chicken? Try eggs or beans. Coffee repulsive? Switch to ginger tea.
This phase passes. By second trimester, many foods become edible again.
Staying Hydrated
Dehydration makes nausea worse. But drinking water can be hard when you feel sick.
Tips:
- Sip small amounts throughout the day
- Try flavored water, electrolyte drinks, or coconut water
- Ice chips or popsicles count as fluids
- Ginger ale (with real ginger) can help
When to Worry: Hyperemesis Gravidarum
For some women, nausea is extreme. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is severe, persistent nausea and vomiting that leads to dehydration and weight loss.
Signs to call your doctor:
- Can't keep any food or fluids down for 24 hours
- Signs of dehydration (dark urine, dizziness, dry mouth)
- Losing weight
HG needs medical treatment. Don't suffer in silence — help is available.
What About Prenatal Vitamins?
Some prenatal vitamins make nausea worse, especially those with iron. Try:
- Taking them at night instead of morning
- Taking with food
- Switching to a different brand (gummies or chewables)
- Asking your doctor about a lower-iron option temporarily
